Art Learning Targets:

All students in the elementary art program will develop a basic mental storehouse of images and vocabulary along with understanding creating art is an important part of being human. Also students will learn about a variety of artists and art movements throughout history. Finally, students will understand art is related and intertwined with many other subject areas.

Kindergarten:  Students will learn to use art materials appropriately,  improve fine motor skills, work with a variety of art supplies to create 2-D and 3-D art works, learn to work individually or as a group, learn basic art concepts (line, design, and symmetry), use simple shapes to create finished projects, and develop their creativity skills.

First Grade:  Students will continue to build on skills learned in Kindergarten. Students will start to communicate through art using more than words, learn about warm and cool colors, texture, and understand the difference between 2-D and 3-D design.

Second Grade:  Students will build on knowledge from first grade and begin adding such skills as;  expressing ideas and creativity, show depth and space, learn more difficult techniques, work with more advanced materials, be able to identify and create 2-D and 3-D objects, create kinetic art, and show feelings and emotions in their art work.

Third Grade:  Students will build on past knowledge by using more advanced tools to create neat quality projects and learn how they and others can express themselves through art.

Forth Grade:  Students will build on prior knowledge by using a variety of materials successfully, develop knowledge of principals and elements of design, learn how art changes between artists, times, and cultures, start to write about art, understand the advantages and limitations of materials, and why artist chose particular materials.

Fifth Grade:  Fifth grade students will use prior skills to demonstrate their knowledge of art and design, learn to create perspective, and demonstrate their ability to produce quality creative design.
